Maunt Haguro
Mount Haguro is a sacred mountain known as one of the “Dewa Sanzan” together with Mount Gassan and Mount Yudono. From JR Tsuruoka Station, you can reach the nearest stop “Haguro-sancho” (Mt. Haguro Summit) in about 50 minutes by bus. From the approach entrance to the summit’s “Haguro-san Sanzin Gosaiden,” the distance is about 1.7 km, and you climb 2,446 stone steps known as Ichinosaka, Ninosaka, and Sannosaka. Because parts of the route are steep or narrow, visitors who are concerned about climbing can also go up by car or bus. Along the Shugendo path, cedar trees over 300 years old grow densely, and the sound of yamabushi conch shells sometimes carried on the wind creates a tense, solemn atmosphere. Highlights along the way include the massive “Jiji-sugi” cedar said to be 1,000 years old and the oldest five-story pagoda in the Tohoku region, built more than 600 years ago. After passing the pagoda, Ichinosaka begins, followed by Ninosaka and Sannosaka—an ascent that feels like real mountain climbing. Reaching the summit brings a sense of accomplishment and refreshing satisfaction that makes you forget the fatigue. At the top stands the grand “Haguro-san Sanzin Gosaiden,” a solemn shrine hall with a thatched roof and total plaster finish; after persevering step by step, you might discover a new side of yourself.
