Hakuto Kaigan Beach

Hakuto Coast is said to be the stage of the myth “The White Rabbit of Inaba,” as recorded in texts like the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki. As described in the myth, the coastline features rocky reefs likened to the backs of crocodiles/sharks and a bow-shaped stretch of white sand, creating a mystical and beautiful seascape. It’s also popular for marine sports such as surfing and bodyboarding; the deep emerald-tinged blue sea sparkles in the sunlight, and its contrast with the white sand is striking—far from the stereotypical image of rough Sea of Japan waves. Offshore, you can also see Okinoshima, the island the rabbit is said to have crossed, adding to the scenic views. Swimming is currently prohibited, so please take care. Access: by car, about 15 minutes from Tottori IC (Tottori Expressway), about 1 hour 30 minutes from Sayo JCT. By public transport, from JR San’in Main Line “Tottori Station,” take a Hinomaru Bus (Kano-bound) for about 40 minutes, get off at “Hakuto Jinja-mae,” and it’s right there.
