Yokai Jinjya Shrine
Yokai Shrine is located at the end of Mizuki Shigeru Road, and is a shrine into which manga artist Shigeru Mizuki is said to have poured his spirit. At exactly midnight on New Year’s Day 2000, the “Yokai Shrine Completion Memorial Service” was held, drawing fans from across Japan who wanted to witness the moment. The stated purposes of establishing the shrine include preserving “the homeland of yokai” and protecting a natural environment where yokai can live comfortably. The sacred objects include a large piece of black granite nearly 3 meters in size and a 300-year-old zelkova tree. It is said to offer blessings for household safety, traffic safety, warding off misfortune, good luck, wish fulfillment, exam success, and recovery from illness. Omamori and ema sold at the shrine office feature illustrations of Kitaro and other yokai—great as travel mementos or souvenirs. Access: by car, from Yonago IC (Yonago Expressway) via Route 431 (about 25 km). By train, take the JR Sakai Line from Yonago Station to Sakaiminato Station, then walk via Mizuki Shigeru Road.
