Kannawa Onsen
Kannawa Onsen is one of the Beppu Eight Hot Springs in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, and it is a hot spring district famous as a therapeutic bathing destination. Because many people stay for long periods, the area is known for having many simple rental rooms for extended visits. It also features many small hot spring inns, and while each has a retro atmosphere, it is also a hidden-gem spot where you can enjoy lavish meals and excellent hot springs. Most of Beppu’s hot spring sources are concentrated in Kannawa, and together with its nostalgic streetscape, it is a popular tourist destination. Because most of the Beppu “hells” are also concentrated in Kannawa, it is a place strongly associated with the image of “Beppu Onsen.” A distinctive feature is the steam rising from all over the town. There are also many public bathhouses, including nine locations such as Kannawa Mushi-yu, Shonin-yu, Shibu-no-yu Kumiai Onsen, Jigokubaru Onsen, Sujiyu Onsen, Atsu-no-yu Onsen, Tani-no-yu, Hyotan Onsen, and Yume Tamatebako, where you can bathe for around 80 yen, making it relatively affordable. Because the area sits on gently rising terrain, it is also recommended to stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere. Access to Kannawa Onsen is about 30 minutes by bus from Beppu Station.
