Chinoike Jigoku

Chinoike Jigoku (Blood Pond Hell) is one of the famous “hells” on the Beppu Jigoku Meguri route in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture. Designated as a National Place of Scenic Beauty, it is Japan’s oldest natural hell. Red hot spring water sends up steam, and the mineral-rich mud that creates the red color is said to have beneficial medicinal properties. With souvenir shops, a restaurant, and a foot bath, many visitors stop here to take a break during their Jigoku Meguri sightseeing. At the dining spot Gokurakutei, visitors can enjoy jigoku-mushi dishes and Blood Pond pudding, as well as Oita specialties such as dangojiru and toriten. At Chinoike Jigoku, you can experience the feeling of returning from “hell to paradise.” It is recommended to enjoy this hell attraction with family, as it is fun for both children and adults. There are demons everywhere, which can be a little scary, but adults will likely be fine. Take photos with the demons and try the pseudo-experience of falling into Chinoike Jigoku to feel like you have made your own journey to paradise. Access to Chinoike Jigoku is by taking a Kamenoi Bus bound for Kannawa from JR Beppu Station, getting off at “Chinoike Jigoku-mae,” then it is right nearby. Using the Jigoku Meguri bus makes it easy to reach.
