Nagasaki Peace Memorial Park

Peace Park was created with the wish that the tragic past—when about 150,000 people died due to the atomic bomb dropped on Nagasaki on August 9, 1945 (Showa 20)—would never be repeated. As a symbol of the desire for peace, the bronze Peace Statue stands here, measuring 9.7 meters tall and weighing 30 tons. The Peace Statue was created by Nagasaki-born sculptor Seibo Kitamura. Every year on August 9, a moment of silence is held here to mourn the victims, and a peace declaration is made to the world. Another symbol of Peace Park is the “Fountain of Peace.” This circular fountain located in front of the Peace Statue was installed in 1969 (Showa 44) to console the souls of those who died from the atomic bombing. Access to the Nagasaki Atomic Bomb Museum by car is via the Nagasaki Expressway: exit at “Nagasaki Tarami IC,” continue via the Nagasaki Bypass, exit at “Kawahira IC (Peace Park / Showa-machi area),” then drive about 5 minutes toward the city center. By public transportation, take the tram bound for “Akapoko” from JR Nagasaki Station, get off at “Atomic Bomb Museum” stop, then walk about 5 minutes. The “Nagasaki Sightseeing Route Bus” operated by Nagasaki Bus is also very convenient for tourism, as it circulates major city attractions such as Glover Garden, Oura Cathedral, Oranda-zaka, Nagasaki Shinchi Chinatown, Dejima, Peace Park, and the Atomic Bomb Museum.
