Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art

The Kyoto City KYOCERA Museum of Art is a public art museum located in Okazaki Park, Sakyo Ward, Kyoto City, Kyoto Prefecture, and is the second-oldest public art museum in Japan. It is one of the four national/public museums and art museums in Kyoto City collectively known as “Kyoto Museums For.” The museum opened in 1933 (Showa 8) to commemorate Emperor Showa’s enthronement ceremonies, and it holds many masterpieces of modern Japanese painting, including works from the Kyoto art scene. Access is about an 8-minute walk from Higashiyama Station on the Kyoto Municipal Subway, or right by the “Okazaki Koen / Museum & Heian Jingu-mae” bus stop using Kyoto City Bus routes 5, 100, or 110 from JR Kyoto Station. In spring 2020, it reopened after a major renovation. While preserving its distinctive blend of Japanese and Western architectural design, the renewal added a new glass-walled underground entrance, making the building itself a highlight where retro and modern elements merge. The new wing, “Higashiyama Cube,” hosts exhibitions ranging from contemporary art to design, manga, anime, and fashion. New spaces such as “Kyocera Square,” a rooftop terrace, a café, and a shop were also created, making it an even more pleasant place to visit.
