The Museum of Kyoto
The Kyoto Museum of Culture is a comprehensive cultural facility that opened in 1988 (Showa 63) to introduce Kyoto’s history and culture in an easy-to-understand way. Visitors can casually explore materials related to history, fine arts, crafts, archaeology, and folk culture, and the film library in particular is well developed, screening video resources, classics, and acclaimed films. Alongside traditional culture, the museum also exhibits arts and crafts by contemporary creators who are shaping new eras, and special exhibitions are held regularly. In 2011 (Heisei 23), it was renewed as a museum where you can experience the "real thing," offering a variety of special exhibitions on the 4th floor, while the general exhibition rooms on the 2nd and 3rd floors introduce excellent works connected to Kyoto through changing themes. There are many highlights, including an annex designated as an Important Cultural Property for its modern Western-style architecture, and a recreated roji shopping lane that evokes Kyoto’s machiya lattice streetscape. The museum also has a museum shop and dining options. It is about a 3-minute walk from Karasuma Oike Subway Station Exit 5, and about a 10-minute walk from Nishiki Market.
