Jojakko-ji Temple

Jojakko-ji Temple is a Nichiren Buddhist temple in Sagano, Kyoto. Located on the eastern slope of Mount Ogura, it was named for its tranquil atmosphere reminiscent of the serene realm of eternal quiet radiance. The impressive Niomon Gate with a cypress-bark roof was relocated in 1616 (Genna 2) from the head temple Honkoku-ji, and powerful guardian statues said to be the work of Unkei welcome visitors. From here, climb the stone steps lined with maple trees to reach the Main Hall, the Myoken Hall, and the Tahoto Pagoda. The cypress-bark-roofed Tahoto Pagoda is an Important Cultural Property, noted for its beautifully balanced form. In the Suminokura Museum to the left of the gate, you can see items connected to the wealthy merchant Suminokura family, associated with Jojakko-ji. From the temple, the view over Sagano is superb. More than 200 maple trees are planted in the temple gardens, and in autumn the entire mountainside is wrapped in vivid fall colors. The temple is also known as a place to view the Daimonji Bonfire on August 16, and on that day it offers evening admission. To reach it from Arashiyama, enjoy a walk through the bamboo grove, detour around the Trocco Arashiyama Station building, and continue along the road—the temple is close by.
