Kanei Tsuhosen
The Kan’ei Tsuho Zenigata is a giant sand drawing in Kanonji City, Kagawa Prefecture, depicting the Edo-period Kan’ei Tsuho coin. It measures about 345 meters around, 122 meters long, and 90 meters wide. Though it is oval, it appears perfectly round when viewed from the observatory at the top of Kotohiki Park. It is said to have been created in a single night in 1633 to welcome the domain lord during an inspection tour. People say that those who see it will “never be short of money for life,” and many tourists visit daily. In fact, Kanonji has produced large lottery winners. The sand drawing is “touched up” in spring and autumn, and after typhoons, citizens work together to repair it—showing how dearly it is cared for. You can only enter the sand drawing at specific times. Kotohiki Park also has the World Coin Museum, making it feel like a place that brings good financial connections. It is illuminated every night from sunset to 22:00 and is a major highlight of Kanonji. Access: from JR Kanonji Station, take the shared-ride bus (Gogo Takamuro Line) and get off at Kotohiki Park stop—right nearby.
