Misasa Onsen

Misasa Onsen is one of the world’s leading “radioactive springs,” containing high concentrations of radon, and is described as having a “hormesis effect” that may enhance the body’s healing ability. It is said to activate metabolism, boost immunity, and increase natural healing power: exposure to trace amounts of radiation stimulates cells, making their activity more vigorous, which is described as leading to these benefits. At Misasa, there are therapeutic methods beyond simply soaking—drinking the water and inhaling the steam are also practiced. As a result, it is stated that cancer mortality among local residents in the Misasa Onsen area is half the national average. In addition to its notable water quality, the area offers a wide variety of accommodations—from inns suited to different needs to long-established ryokan—many of which allow day-use bathing. Misasa Onsen access: by car, from Innosho IC (Chugoku Expressway) via Route 179, or from Yubara IC (Yonago Expressway) via Route 313. By train, take a bus from JR San’in Main Line “Kurayoshi Station” for about 20 minutes (some accommodations offer free pickup). Direct highway buses run to Misasa Onsen from Osaka, Kobe, Okayama, and Hiroshima. At “Misasa Onsen Hot Plaza” (tourist info), geared bicycles and electric-assist bicycles can be rented in 4-hour blocks.
