Tottori Sand Dunes The Sand Museum
The Sand Museum was opened to share the natural sculptural beauty of the Tottori Sand Dunes with visitors from Japan and around the world by exhibiting sand sculptures (“sazo”). With the concept “Travel the World in Sand,” the museum invites prominent domestic and international artists, and is produced by Katsuhiko Chaen. The museum’s backing includes support from institutions such as the Embassy of the Czech Republic and the Embassy of the Slovak Republic, underscoring its serious, museum-level approach. Access: by car, it’s about 2 hours 20 minutes from Yamasaki IC via National Route 29, or about 15 minutes from Tottori IC (Tottori Expressway). By train, from JR Tottori Station take a bus: on the “Sakyu Line,” get off at “Sand Museum-mae” immediately; or take the “Iwami / Iwai Line,” get off at “Sakyu Higashiguchi” and walk about 3 minutes.
