Kibitsuhiko Shrine
Kibitsuhiko Shrine is located in an easily accessible area—close after transferring from JR Okayama Station to the Kibi Line (Momotaro Line)—yet it is a mysterious space surrounded by trees. Parts of it are designated as Important Cultural Properties by Okayama Prefecture. The founding date is unknown; the main hall and the worship hall (to the right of the main hall) were repeatedly lost to fires and war, and the current structures were rebuilt in 1936 (Showa 11). There is also a Koyasu Shrine within the grounds, and visitors come seeking blessings for fertility, childcare, and safe childbirth. On the back side, there is another shrine area; along the way through the torii gate to the Inari Shrine, you will pass “Ura Shrine,” where an “oni” (demon) said to have been defeated by Momotaro is enshrined. Besides being a sightseeing spot, it is also used for exorcisms (yakubarai), directional misfortune prayers, Shichi-Go-San, and Shinto weddings. Note that it is different from the similarly named “Kibitsu Shrine,” and they are in different locations—be careful not to confuse them.
