Handayama Botanical Garden
Handayama Botanical Garden is a botanical garden in a hilly area, and despite being surrounded by nature, it is easy to access—about a 15-minute walk from JR Hokaiin Station. Admission is inexpensive for both adults and children, and there is parking for 90+ cars, so not only tourists but also locals sometimes visit to get exercise. It is especially known for plum blossoms, cherry blossoms, and azaleas; when these flowers are in full bloom, visitor numbers rise, and during peak flower-viewing season even the large parking lot may not be enough, leading to long lines of cars waiting to park. The garden manages about 3,200 plant species, allowing visitors to observe many plants not often seen in everyday life—enjoyable both for plant enthusiasts and for casual visitors. Because the grounds are very large, it takes stamina to see everything; those who want some exercise during sightseeing can enjoy strolling while observing beautiful plants. Since it is located at slightly higher elevation, you can also enjoy views of the city area from the top.
