Ebino Plateau
Ebino Plateau is a highland area at about 1,200 meters elevation extending from Miyazaki toward Kagoshima and is noted as Japan’s first national park area. It lies in the northern part of Kirishima-Yaku National Park and is rich in nature, with plants that can only be seen in this region—making it an excellent trekking destination with many highlights. Korea-dake (1,700 m), the highest peak in the plateau’s southeast, has a volcanic lake about 300 meters deep; on clear days it is said you can even see as far as Korea, which is how the mountain got its name. “Rokkannon Miike” is considered one of the most beautiful Kirishima volcanic lakes; due to its acidic water, the surface shines cobalt blue. In autumn, the contrast of blue sky, red leaves, and sparkling lake is especially striking. Campsites are also well developed, making it family-friendly. Access: by car, exit Kyushu Expressway at “Ebino IC,” then via Kirishima Bird Line and Prefectural Route 30, about 20 km (about 30 minutes). By public transportation, highway buses to “Ebino IC” run from Hakata Station, Kagoshima Airport, and Miyazaki Station.
