Udo Shrine
Udo Jingu is a famous spot along Miyazaki Prefecture’s long Nichinan Coast, where the wide blue sky and sunlight reflecting off the glittering Pacific Ocean, along with tropical roadside plants, create a distinctly subtropical atmosphere. The shrine stands on a cape protruding into the vast Pacific, and its vermilion main hall is enshrined inside a large cave. It venerates Ugayafukiaezu-no-Mikoto, the son of Yamasachihiko from the “Umisachi–Yamasachi” myth, and is one of the best-known shrines in Miyazaki. The broader Udozaki area, including Udo Jingu, is designated a scenic site, and the shrine is said to grant blessings for safe childbirth, matchmaking, and marital harmony. Access by public transport: from Miyazaki Airport, take a local bus (bound for Nichinan / Obi / Toimisaki) about 60 minutes, get off at “Udo Jinja” bus stop, then walk about 10 minutes. By train: from JR Miyazaki Station, take the JR Nichinan Line to “Ibii Station” or “Aburatsu Station,” transfer to a local bus (Nichinan / Obi / Toimisaki bound) about 20 minutes, get off at “Udo Jingu,” then walk about 10 minutes. By car: about 1 hour from Miyazaki Expressway “Miyazaki IC” via Route 220. Note: If continuous rainfall exceeds 170 mm, the “Oryūzako–Kazeta” section of Route 220 may be closed; detour via Prefectural Route 28.
