Ryoma Sakamoto statue

The Sakamoto Ryoma Statue is located at Katsurahama in Kochi Prefecture. Kochi locals raised funds to build this 13-meter-tall statue of Ryoma, depicted in a stylish pose with one hand tucked into his chest and wearing boots. In fact, among Japanese bronze statues, Sakamoto Ryoma statues are said to be the most numerous. Be sure to see the one in his hometown too. Because it’s so large, it can be hard to decide the best photo angle, but shooting from below upward often looks good. Around November 15 (Ryoma’s birthday and also the day he died), the Ryoma Festival is held on the Sunday nearest that date, turning the entire Katsurahama Park area into an event venue. Around that period, a viewing platform is installed so you can look out over the Pacific from the same eye level as Ryoma. There is also an almost life-size Ryoma statue at Kochi Airport, so those flying in may want to check it out too. Since Katsurahama itself is a tourist area, after seeing the statue, it’s recommended to visit the Sakamoto Ryoma Memorial Museum as well. It’s an essential Kochi sightseeing spot. Access is about 40 minutes by bus from Kochi Station.
