Honetsukidori Ikkaku Marugame Main Shop is Ikkaku’s original location in Marugame. It is the busiest among Ikkaku locations, and even if you arrive right at opening, you’ll likely have to line up. However, because what people order and what is served are largely fixed, turnover is fast and your turn comes relatively quickly. Many say the bone-in chicken here is the best, and some people even come all the way from Takamatsu City. The main dish is bone-in chicken, offered in two types: “oya” (mature chicken) and “hina” (young chicken). Oya is firmer and very chewy. It’s cut with a knife to make it easier to eat. Hina is softer and easier for children to eat. For those who drink alcohol, beer is the classic choice; for those who don’t, chicken rice is recommended. The accompanying chicken soup is very flavorful despite having no ingredients in it. The chicken itself is heavily seasoned with garlic, salt, and pepper—so strong that the aroma surpasses even gyoza. Access is 1 minute on foot from the JR Marugame Station North Exit.
