Yokokan Garden
Yokokan Garden is a Japanese garden in Fukui City, Fukui Prefecture. The original garden was a villa of the Matsudaira family, lords of the Fukui Domain, and in the Edo period it was called the "Osen-sui Yashiki." The shoin-style buildings around the large pond—constructed with careful calculations to harmonize with the garden—along with the stroll-style pond garden (kaiyu-shiki rin-sen teien) were long regarded as a renowned garden of its era. Today, it is a popular spot not only with domestic visitors but also with travelers from overseas, including recognition such as placing third for three consecutive times in the Japanese garden specialty magazine "Sukiya Living (Journal of Japanese Gardening)." In recent years, as sukiya-style architecture has gained attention again among affluent audiences in Japan, it continues to stand as a dignified model example. The garden’s pond, stone arrangements, and trees create a wonderful space that lets you feel the seasons. In 1982, it was designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty, and restoration work has been carried out on buildings and other elements. Nearby, there are attractions such as the Fukui City Local History Museum, making it a good place to visit as part of exploring Fukui’s history. To get to Yokokan Garden, it is about a 15-minute walk from Fukui Station.
