Ujo Park
Ujo Park (Kojō Park) surrounds Okayama Castle and is a popular sightseeing spot where you can take a relaxing stroll while viewing the castle’s main keep. The name comes from the look of Okayama Castle: because the keep is jet black and resembles a crow, it came to be called “Ujo” (Crow Castle). By the way, it’s read “Ujo,” not “Karasujō.” In spring, cherry blossoms bloom and you can enjoy walking around the castle in comfortable weather. Seasonal nighttime illuminations are also held in spring, summer, and autumn; the castle—dark and sometimes intimidating in daytime—takes on a completely different impression when beautifully lit up. Events are sometimes held in the park as well, such as gourmet events and local specialty corners, so if you’re interested, it’s worth researching in advance via the website. There is a paid parking lot near Ujo Park, so check the location carefully before arriving. (If you do not enter the main keep, the park itself is free.)
