Yukemuri Observatory
Yukemuri Observatory is a viewpoint in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, where you can see the hot spring steam (yukemuri) rising from the Kannawa Onsen area. From here you can enjoy not only the steam-filled landscape of Kannawa, but also views of Mount Tsurumi and Mount Ogi. It was selected as the second-ranked “Japanese landscape to preserve for the 21st century” (with Mount Fuji ranked first), making it a memorable view that many travelers want to see at least once. The night view is especially beautiful and has also been recognized as a Japan Night View Heritage site. The combination of nature and rising steam is moving on its own, and depending on the timing, the area may also be illuminated, which is also recommended. The observatory has benches and an information board introducing the scenery. If you stay in Kannawa Onsen, it is also recommended to take a walk to the observatory and enjoy the night view. The retro-style slope along the way is sure to become a lasting travel memory. Access to Yukemuri Observatory is about a 20-minute drive from JR Beppu Station, and there is parking so you can visit by car. From Kannawa Onsen, it is about a 10-minute walk.
