Suzakumon Gate

Suzakumon Gate is a historic cultural asset located on the southern side of the Heijō-kyō Palace Site, and is also one of the component properties of the UNESCO World Heritage site “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara.” About 1,300 years ago, the broad plaza in front of Suzakumon Gate—then the main entrance to the imperial palace—served as an important ceremonial and festive space in the Nara period. It was used to welcome and send off foreign envoys, host large public gatherings such as utagaki singing events, and celebrate the New Year with the emperor, making it a central stage for political and cultural life. In 2018, major improvements were completed along Suzaku Avenue and Nijo Avenue, the former main streets of the ancient capital, and the sightseeing hub “Suzakumon Plaza” opened. This area now offers a richer way to experience Nara’s history, culture, and cuisine, featuring five main facilities: the “Heijō Palace Izanai-kan,” where visitors can learn about highlights of the historical park and view excavated artifacts and materials; the “Tenpyō Mitsuki-kan,” which serves as an information center and shop for local specialties; the “Tenpyō Umashi-kan,” where guests can dine while enjoying views of the park; the “Tenpyō Miharashi-kan,” offering services such as a cycle station, observation deck, and VR theater; and the “Tenpyō Tsudoi-kan,” used as a meeting point and rest area. These facilities are complemented by open-air spaces including expansive lawns and a reconstructed Tang Dynasty envoy ship, making Suzakumon Plaza a comprehensive tourist destination. Suzakumon Gate is accessible on foot in about 20 minutes from the South Exit of Yamato-Saidaiji Station on the Kintetsu Nara Line, or about 20 minutes from Shin-Omiya Station on the same line.
