Horikiri Pass

Horikiri Pass is located along Miyazaki’s Nichinan Coast and is a viewpoint where you can take in the wavy rock formations and a sweeping view of the Pacific Ocean. Under a wide blue sky, sunlight sparkles on the vast sea, and the tropical atmosphere is enhanced by roadside plants and palm-lined scenery. Nearby is “Michi-no-Eki Phoenix,” where mango soft-serve ice cream is especially popular; it also offers souvenirs and dining options featuring local flavors. The Nichinan Coast is a beloved drive route running north–south through Miyazaki, and besides Horikiri Pass, famous stops such as Aoshima and Udo Jingu are scattered along the way—making a drive that hops between sights highly recommended. Access: by car, about 20 minutes (14 km) from Miyazaki Expressway “Miyazaki IC.” By public transportation, from JR Nichinan Line “Uchiumi Station,” walk 1 minute to the “Uchiumi-ekimae” Miyazaki Kotsu bus stop, ride 4 minutes toward “Airport / Miyazaki Station,” and get off at “Horikiri-toge” bus stop. It’s about 1 km to Michi-no-Eki Phoenix and about 2 km to Aoshima.
