Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum

The Gekkeikan Okura Sake Museum is a memorial museum in Fushimi, Kyoto’s famous sake-brewing district, introducing the history of Gekkeikan and the craftsmanship behind Fushimi sake making. By preserving and exhibiting traditional brewing tools from the past, it offers a place to experience Kyoto–Fushimi’s rich sake culture. A variety of historical materials tracing Gekkeikan’s story since its founding, along with the sake-brewing songs passed down by artisans, recreate the atmosphere of an old sake brewery. Across the courtyard, the adjacent Gekkeikan Sake Kobo brews sake using traditional methods by Tajima-style master brewers (toji). After touring the facility, you can also enjoy a sake tasting in the lobby; currently, three varieties are offered: "Retro Bottle Ginjo," "Tama no Izumi Daiginjo," and "Plum Wine." The shop sells not only sake but also sake manju sweets and original goods. It is a 5-minute walk from Chushojima Station on the Keihan Kyoto Line and a 10-minute walk from Momoyamagoryo-mae Station on the Kintetsu Line. Nearby are Teradaya, famous for an incident involving Sakamoto Ryoma, and the boarding point for the Fushimi Jikkokubune boat ride. To explore Fushimi in depth—including a visit out to Fushimi Momoyama Castle—you will want to allow a full day.
