Kitano Tenmangu Shrine
Kitano Tenmangu Shrine is the head shrine of approximately 12,000 Tenmangu and Tenjin shrines across Japan and is dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane. A man of exceptional talent, Michizane rose to prominence as a scholar-turned-statesman but was suddenly exiled to Dazaifu in Kyushu due to political intrigue by the Fujiwara clan, where he died two years later. After his death, disasters such as lightning strikes and earthquakes occurred in Kyoto, which were believed to be his vengeful spirit. To appease him, Kitano Tenmangu Shrine was established. Because of his scholarly achievements, Michizane came to be revered as the god of learning, attracting worshippers from across the country. Passing through the first torii gate and along the long approach, visitors will find the ema hall to the left after passing through the Romon Gate, where countless votive tablets praying for academic success and exam results are dedicated. Deeper in the grounds, in front of the Inui Shrine, lies a statue of a sacred ox, said to be Michizane’s divine messenger, and visitors continuously stroke its head for good fortune. The shrine hosts the Plum Blossom Festival in February and the Zuiki Festival in October and is also famous for its autumn foliage. On the 25th of every month, known as "Tenjin-san Day," food stalls line the approach road, creating a lively atmosphere.
