Kyoto Tower

Kyoto Tower is a 131-meter-tall structure standing directly in front of Kyoto Station. As the tallest building in Kyoto, it offers 360-degree panoramic views of the city, including famous landmarks such as Kiyomizu-dera, To-ji Temple’s five-story pagoda, Arashiyama, and Mount Hiei. The tower opened in December 1964, the same year the Tokaido Shinkansen began service and the Tokyo Olympics were held. Various interpretations exist regarding its design, with some likening it to a lighthouse, a candle, or a maiko’s hairpin. The tower is illuminated at night, with lights turned off at midnight. The height of 131 meters includes the lightning rod, and the observation deck is located 100 meters above ground. The tower rises above a building with nine floors above ground and three basement levels. In 2017, the basement first floor through the second floor were renovated and reopened as "KYOTO TOWER SAND," featuring Kyoto-style restaurants and souvenir shops. The third basement floor houses a large public bath, the upper floors of the building serve as Kyoto Tower Hotel, the rooftop hosts a beer garden, the third floor of the tower contains a restaurant, and above that is the observation deck, making it a comprehensive sightseeing destination.
