Experience details

Begin your journey at the Sanmon Gate, Japan’s oldest surviving Zen main gate. Continue into the Hojo gardens, where renowned landscape designer Mirei Shigemori merged ancient symbolism with bold modern geometry to create four distinct dry landscape gardens around the abbot’s quarters.

Each one is a meditative composition in stone, moss, gravel, and space, meant not to represent nature but to distill its essence through abstraction, silence, and form.

Next, cross the iconic Tsutenkyo Bridge, an elevated wooden corridor arching gracefully over the forested ravine of the Sengyokukan stream. Appreciate how architecture and landscape are interwoven to create a living painting that changes color and mood with each season—crimson maples in autumn, soft greens in spring, and mists in early morning.

Arrive at Komyo-in, a hidden jewel often missed by casual visitors, where the Hashin-tei Garden, also by Shigemori, offers a quieter, more intimate expression of Zen harmony. Its carefully placed asymmetrical stones rise from moss and raked gravel like islands in a sea of stillness, inviting contemplation and inner calm.

Throughout the journey, your expert guide will offer insights into the philosophical and artistic principles that make these gardens more than beautiful views—they are spatial meditations, expressions of impermanence, balance, and the uniquely Japanese sensitivity to the space between things.
