Owakudanienchi

Owakudani Park is one of the places where you can observe volcanic steam from the Hakone volcano up close. Among Hakone’s fumarolic areas, it is the largest in scale, and a natural study trail of about 600 meters has been developed. You will smell sulfur in the area, but this is volcanic gas that can be harmful to the human body, so if you feel the smell is especially strong or you experience irritation, avoid entering. Along the trail, you can also see hardy plants that survive in this harsh environment. There are explanatory signs about the formation of the volcano, allowing you to learn about volcanology as well. Before the steam area, there is “Tamago Chaya,” where you can buy the famous “black eggs (kuro-tamago).” These are boiled eggs with shells turned black through a chemical reaction using geothermal heat and volcanic gas, and they are considered a lucky charm—eating one is said to extend your life by seven years. You can enjoy them on the spot or buy them as souvenirs. Access: get off at Hakone Ropeway Owakudani Station and it is right nearby.
