Gamo udon
Gamou Udon is an udon shop in Sakaide City, Kagawa Prefecture, known for very firm, chewy noodles and often ranked among the very top in Kagawa. It’s in a somewhat hard-to-find location, but lines form every day. Set amid rice fields with Mt. Goshikidai visible beyond, some people even sit down and eat while enjoying the view. Another reason for its popularity is its low price—kake udon (small) is 150 yen. Chikuwa tempura is recommended, but the sweet seasoned fried tofu (“age,” 100 yen) is especially recommended. It’s a self-service udon shop where you choose your own toppings and return dishes yourself. Because it gets extremely busy at lunchtime, going early is advised. Whether midsummer or midwinter, you’ll likely be lining up outside, so prepare accordingly. Many people eat outside as well. Recommended for those who want simple yet outstanding udon. The interior is dimly lit and atmospheric. Access is about a 20-minute walk from JR Kamogawa Station.
