HakURakuten Imabari Main Store is a Chinese restaurant famous for Imabari’s local specialty “”yakibuta tamago meshi”” (grilled pork-and-egg rice bowl). It is about an 8-minute walk from JR Yosan Line “”Imabari Station.”” Yakibuta tamago meshi can be eaten at roughly 60 restaurants in Imabari, but this shop is often said to be the originator. The dish consists of rice topped with slices of char siu (roast pork), drizzled with a sweet-and-savory sauce, and finished with a soft-cooked fried egg. While flavors differ by restaurant, Hakurakuten’s key feature is its house sauce, continuously replenished since the restaurant’s founding in 1970. The char siu slices are relatively thick, and the dish is topped with two soft-cooked eggs, which is another hallmark. For an extra 220 yen you can upgrade to a large portion, and there are also value set menus pairing the rice bowl with ramen or side dishes. The interior has a stylish atmosphere that can feel approachable even for solo diners, and there is a limited-quantity “”ladies’ set”” featuring a half-size rice bowl plus dessert such as annin tofu.
