今治城
Imabari Castle was built in 1604 by the renowned castle-building master Todo Takatora and is also known as “”Fukiage Castle,”” named after the sand dunes once formed by wind-blown sand in the main bailey area. From 1635 onward, the castle served as the residence of the Matsudaira clan for approximately 230 years throughout the Edo period. Most of the original structures were dismantled in the Meiji era, except for parts of the stone walls and moats. The current castle tower was reconstructed in 1980. From the observation deck on the sixth floor, visitors can enjoy views of the Seto Inland Sea and the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge. Other floors display armor, swords, and historical artifacts, with additional exhibits in the Yamazato Turret. Unlike most castles, Imabari Castle’s moats are filled with seawater, allowing visitors to see marine fish such as sharks swimming alongside carp. The castle is illuminated nightly from 30 minutes after sunset until 22:00, creating a beautiful nighttime landmark.
