Dakigaeri Valley

Dakigaeri Gorge is a celebrated scenic gorge often called the "Yabakei of Tohoku." Its mixed forests of pine, cherry, and maple along both banks, the many waterfalls including Mikaeri Falls cascading over the cliffs, and the cobalt-blue stream create exceptional beauty. The gorge offers seasonal nature year-round: cherry blossoms in spring, fresh greenery in summer, colorful autumn foliage such as maples, and snowy landscapes in winter. Access is about 5 minutes by car from JR Jindai Station, or about 15 minutes by car from JR Kakunodate Station. Walking along the well-maintained, slightly elevated promenade while viewing the gorge’s scenery can make everyday worries feel small. The view from the suspension bridge "Kami no Iwabashi" is especially recommended. The impressive waterfalls, with both abundant volume and height, are also fitting as a healing spot where you can soak in negative ions, and you can even play in the water along the riverbed. Note that some areas can be slippery due to spring water seeping from the slopes, so extra caution is needed for older visitors and children. Parking, toilets, and a shop are available. Currently, the trail beyond Mikaeri Falls is closed due to collapses and related damage, so please check the latest information before visiting.
