Zao Large open-air bath

The Zao Onsen Big Open-Air Bath (Zao Onsen Dairotenburo) is a huge riverside open-air bath often called a symbol of Zao Onsen. From JR Yamagata Station, take a bus about 40 minutes to the Zao Onsen Bus Terminal, then walk about 20 minutes (about 18 minutes as listed). The strongly acidic, free-flowing sulfur hot spring is 100% source-fed, and it is one of the most popular spots in the hot-spring town. There are two baths each for men and women, and together they are said to accommodate as many as 200 people. For both men and women, one bath is hotter and one is milder, so children can bathe comfortably as well. The sound of the river flowing right beside the baths is soothing, and the grand natural scenery changes with the seasons. The women’s lukewarm bath is partly under a building, creating a cave-bath-like feel that is popular with curious children. Japanese serow occasionally appear nearby, delighting bathers. Visitors also receive discount coupons for “Super Slider” and “Paintball,” making it fun to enjoy activities with the family after bathing.
