Myoban Onsen

Myoban Onsen is a hot spring area located on the mid-slope of Mount Garandake, a little away from central Beppu City in Oita Prefecture. It is a mountain hot spring town where yunohana (mineral bath salts) have been harvested since the Edo period. Yunohana huts stand throughout the area, and the townscape filled with rising steam is designated as an Important Cultural Landscape of Japan. Some yunohana huts can also be visited for sightseeing. The waters are said to be effective for neuralgia, rheumatism, and skin conditions. Because the yunohana production technique of Beppu Myoban Onsen is designated as an Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Japan, be sure to see it when you visit. Nearby, Beppu Onsen Hoyoland offers the chance to experience mud baths. The area also features well-known onsen destinations such as ANA InterContinental Beppu Resort & Spa and Myoban Yunosato, making it famous as a hot spring region. A local specialty is jigoku-mushi pudding, which has a firm, old-fashioned taste. After enjoying Beppu Onsen, it is recommended to visit Myoban Onsen with its rows of yunohana huts. Access to Myoban Onsen is about 35 minutes by bus from Beppu Station.
