Unzen Fukudaya
Unzen Fukudaya is a ryokan that modernly arranges the warm charm of traditional folk crafts, and it was featured as a highly rated “3 Pavilion” property in the Michelin Guide Fukuoka / Saga / Nagasaki 2019 special edition. Its proud hot spring is 100% free-flowing from the source, and the milky white water with a soothing sulfur scent is deeply relaxing. A sauna is also available, and four private baths make it enjoyable for families, couples, and girls’ trips alike. The cuisine highlights hot pot dishes made with abundant local ingredients: freshly harvested vegetables, branded beef and pork, and seafood from the Shimabara Peninsula and Isahaya Bay. Be sure to try the secret-recipe “Yoi Choru Nabe.” There is also a guests-only teppanyaki corner where you can enjoy Nagasaki Wagyu, which won Japan’s top honor in 2012. The ryokan has 34 rooms in total; the mingei-modern interior design feels nostalgic yet fresh, offering calm, practical comfort. Access by public transportation: from JR Isahaya Station, take the Unzen Line bus from the Isahaya Station-mae bus terminal bound for Unzen for about 80 minutes, get off at “Ko-jigoku Iriguchi,” and it’s right there. By car, it takes about 80 minutes (about 60 km) from the Nagasaki Expressway Isahaya IC via Unzen Green Road and Prefectural Route 131.
