Yokohama Museum of Art
Yokohama Museum of Art opened in 1989 as a pavilion for the Yokohama Expo. It houses works by artists connected to Yokohama as well as collections of major figures such as Picasso, Dalí, and Cézanne. Because Yokohama is one of the birthplaces of photography in Japan, the museum also places strong emphasis on collecting and exhibiting photography. Designed by renowned architect Kenzo Tange, the museum’s heavy stone exterior builds anticipation before you even enter. Inside are seven galleries, hosting both collection exhibitions and special exhibitions. With the concept of “see, create, learn,” it also offers multipurpose spaces for lectures and events, and the “Art Information Center,” which holds over 110,000 art resources open for anyone to use freely. For a break during your visit, you can stop by “Café Ogurayama,” a cafe filled with natural light. Access: you can reach it from Sakuragicho Station (JR / Municipal Subway) as well, but it’s most convenient from Minatomirai Station on the Minatomirai Line—about a 3-minute walk.
