Enoshima
Enoshima is an island designated as one of Japan’s Scenic Views (Nihon Hyakkei). Because it is connected to the Shonan coast by land, you can access it on foot or by car. Upon arriving, you’ll find a main approach lined with eateries and souvenir shops. Surrounded by the sea, the island offers abundant seafood, and fresh shirasu (whitebait)—best enjoyed near the landing sites—is a famous specialty. Beyond the approach is Enoshima Shrine, a historic shrine counted among the Three Great Benzaiten shrines of Japan; if you visit Enoshima, it’s well worth paying your respects. The island is also packed with well-known spots, including the botanical garden “Enoshima Samuel Cocking Garden,” the beautifully illuminated “Enoshima Sea Candle” lighthouse, the ocean-view “Chigogafuchi,” and the cave “Iwaya.” There are many ups and downs, but it’s possible to tour the island in a single day. Access: about a 15-minute walk from Shonan-Enoshima Station (Shonan Monorail), or about a 10-minute walk from Katase-Enoshima Station (Odakyu Enoshima Line).
