Shikoku Village
Shikoku Mura is an open-air museum in Yashima, Takamatsu City, themed around traditional architecture. Located at the foot of the Yashima Driveway, it exhibits 23 relocated buildings from the Edo to Meiji periods—including homes, traditional industry facilities, and a lighthouse—in a spacious outdoor setting (the scale makes the site feel large). Almost all buildings are designated or registered as cultural properties, including eight Important Cultural Properties and Important Tangible Folk Cultural Properties. Beyond buildings, highlights include the Shodoshima Rural Kabuki Stage and the arched Shikoku Mura Stone Boat Bridge. The Shikoku Mura Gallery, designed by architect Tadao Ando, features an art museum and garden where you can see works by artists such as Picasso and Renoir. At the entrance stands the thatched-roof “Zaigo Udon Honke Waraya,” and there is also a relocated tea room called “Ijin-kan,” moved from Kobe. The Ijin-kan’s furniture was imported from items used in England about 150 years ago, offering a true time-slip experience. Access is about a 5-minute walk from Kotoden Yashima Station.
