Kusasenrigahama
Kusasenri-ga-hama is a grassland area on Mt. Aso with a viewpoint (Kusasenri Observatory). It has excellent scenery and is designated a National Place of Scenic Beauty and Natural Monument. The vast grassland spread out with Mt. Aso as a dramatic backdrop creates a grand landscape. Many visitors include it as part of an Mt. Aso sightseeing set, since it’s walkable from the Aso Volcano Museum. There is an observation deck, and the wide open area also allows for horseback riding experiences. It’s rare in Japan to see such an expansive landscape, so if you go to Mt. Aso, it’s highly recommended to visit. Around Mt. Aso, you may also find activities like helicopter rides or paragliding depending on timing. There are restaurants as well, and even spending a full day may not feel like enough because of the scenery. The large central pond is a former crater. Horses are pastured here, and you may see them entering the water or drinking—another highlight. Enjoy the grand scenery in every season. Access: from Aso Station, take a bus for about 35 minutes.
