Takamatsu Marugamemachi Shopping Street
Takamatsu Marugamemachi Shopping Street is one of Kagawa Prefecture’s shopping arcades. It is known nationwide as a successful model case of shopping street revitalization through urban redevelopment, attracting study visits from around Japan. A historic building that survived the Takamatsu air raids—the Hyakujushi Bank Takamatsu Branch—still stands as Marugamemachi’s oldest building. While it has avoided becoming a shuttered shopping street, large-scale stores still present strong competition; nevertheless, people continue to visit for long-established local shops and long-running businesses. High-end brands that didn’t previously exist in the arcade have also opened, creating a balance between new stores and old establishments. With hotels nearby, many tourists and office workers pass through. Often, lesser-known long-running shops can be more delicious than famous ones. There is a large 25 m diameter glass dome on the boundary with Mitsukoshi, where events are held daily. Because it is fully covered by an arcade, you can enjoy it even on rainy days. Access is about a 15-minute walk from JR Takamatsu Station to Takamatsu Marugamemachi Ichibangai.
