Experience details
Start your tour at a museum built in the traditional Japanese machiya style. Learn about Hakata's unique language, traditional handicrafts, and the history of the city. Discover Hakata's unique festivals, which have been supported by the merchants and other local people.
Next, visit Kushida Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the protection of Hakata and the stage for Hakata's largest festival. Admire the giant Yamakasa floats on the shrine grounds.
A short walk from there will take you to an area where temples are gathered. Here you will visit the giant Fukuoka Daibutsu (Fukuoka Buddha), said to be the largest wooden statue in Japan, and a historic Zen temple. These temples have been the spiritual center of Hakata's residents for centuries.
