オールドイングランド道後山の手ホテル
Old England Dogo Yamanote Hotel is a hot-spring hotel in the Dogo Onsen area that is unusual for having Western-style rooms throughout the entire property. Its predecessor was a ryokan called “”Kawakichi Besso,”” founded in 1885 and known to have hosted successive Japanese prime ministers; the property was renovated and reopened in 2004. As the name “”Old England”” suggests, the exterior is brick-built and the interiors are unified with British-style decor. The restaurant serves a creative French full-course meal, while the café offers pastries made by the in-house patissier along with tea. The wine cellar stores over 1,000 varieties of wine, making it a strong choice for wine lovers who want to compare selections. The on-site hot spring baths include a modern stone bath and a hinoki (cypress) bath with a more traditional Japanese feel. Across the street is an affiliated facility, “”Yamanote Mariage Garden,”” which houses attractions such as the “”Giyaman Glass Museum”” displaying around 300 pieces of Edo-period vidro glass and retro Japanese glass from the Meiji and Taisho eras—an easy stop while strolling around Dogo.
