Old Kaichi School
The Former Kaichi School Building is a Western-style school building completed in 1876 (Meiji 9). In the first year of Reiwa (2019), it was designated a National Treasure—the second such designation in Matsumoto City after Matsumoto Castle—making it an invaluable architectural landmark. Because it’s within walking distance of the extremely popular Matsumoto Castle and has an affordable admission fee, it’s considered a must-visit spot when sightseeing around Matsumoto. The school served its role for 90 years until 1963 (Showa 38). Today, it operates as a museum where visitors can view educational materials and exhibits. You can compare classroom scenes from Japan’s early modern education with today’s education, look for similarities, or even reflect on your own elementary school days—especially engaging for families with school-age children and people working in education. Built during a transitional time when Japan began adopting foreign cultural influences, its unique architecture blends Japanese and Western elements into a fascinating style that’s rarely seen today. Free parking is available, but it’s somewhat small; if your accommodation offers parking, it may be easier to walk rather than drive.
