Hiwasa Chelonian Museum Caretta
Hiwasa Sea Turtle Museum Caretta is the world’s only museum specialized entirely in sea turtles. Inside are multiple corners that explain and exhibit sea turtle evolution, nesting, and more in an easy-to-understand way, while also letting you learn by watching real turtles swim. Facilities include a baby turtle tank (0–3 years old), a large turtle pool, the unique “Tadayou Umigame-kan” showcasing rare sea turtles, a specimen corner, and a touch pool where you can interact with clownfish. There are also soft-shelled turtles and land turtles. High-definition videos introduce the history of Hiwasa and sea turtles and explain nesting behavior, deepening understanding. The Ohama Beach observation floor lets you relax while viewing the wide coastline. Loggerhead sea turtles typically come ashore to nest from May to August. Occasionally, rescued wild sea turtles may be released back into the sea; if you’re lucky, you might witness a moving moment. Access is about a 20-minute walk from JR Hiwasa Station.
