SDENSHINKAN MATSUYA

Senshinkan Matsuya is a nostalgic, wooden inn that feels like a symbol of classic Showa-era lodging. It has only 11 rooms, but its old-fashioned atmosphere and piping-hot baths are part of its charm. The name “Senshinkan” is said to have been given by Takahashi Doro (one of the Bakumatsu ‘Three Boats’). As the name suggests, it implies an inn where the heart is cleansed, and the warm hospitality that soothes visitors is another reason for its popularity. Located in the hot spring town, guests can enjoy a “Kyuyu Meguri” (Nine-Bath Tour), visiting nine baths each said to have different benefits. The baths are numbered 1 through 9; after visiting them in order, worshiping at “Shibukou Yakushi” is said to bring blessings. Each bath has a stamp station, so you can collect stamps as you go. The inn’s distinctly Japanese feel and the proprietress’s hospitality are also popular with overseas travelers, sometimes making the guest mix quite international. If you usually pick hotels, this is a great chance to try a charming Japanese inn. A pickup service to the nearest Yudanaka Station is available from 14:30 to 17:30—confirm in advance.
