Kumamoto Station

Kumamoto Station is a JR Kyushu station in Kumamoto City, Kumamoto Prefecture, and serves as the city’s central station. It has facilities such as a general information center and a ticket office (Midori no Madoguchi). With access to the city tram and bus terminal, it’s a frequent stop for Kumamoto sightseeing. Renewed in 2011, Kumamoto Station features a new station building designed to evoke Kumamoto Castle’s steep “musha-gaeshi” stone walls. The new station building was completed in 2019, and the design is by Tadao Ando. Under the elevated tracks is the “Higo Yokamon Ichiba,” where about 60 shops including convenience stores and restaurants operate; many people visit even without using the trains. The roof covering both tram platforms (up and down lines) resembles a cloud shape when seen from above. The surrounding area features many “Kumamoto-oshI” themed packages and buildings. Loved by both tourists and locals, Kumamoto Station is easy to reach: just get off at JR Kumamoto Station. It is also the first and last stop for both buses and trams.
