Ogijima

Ogi-jima is a Seto Inland Sea island in Takamatsu City, Kagawa Prefecture. From Takamatsu Port, you can take the Shiyu Island Shipping ferry “Meon,” which goes via Megi-jima to reach Ogi-jima. Ogi-jima is famous as a “cat island.” It takes about 40 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port. The island is small, with a circumference of about 5 km. Walking to Ogi-jima Lighthouse takes about 30 minutes, but with beautiful sandy beaches and cats along the way, it feels quick. Above the village is Toyotamahime Shrine, known as a scenic viewpoint. Because the island’s many slopes once used “onba” (handcarts), the Onba Factory was created. During the Setouchi Triennale, Ogi-jima hosts art and has recently experienced a migration boom; newcomers have renovated old houses into places like Ogi-jima Library and cafes. Dining and lodging have also developed, with spots such as the Sazae-meshi shop in front of the ferry port, Shima Table, Bistro Iori for authentic French cuisine, and Damonte Shokai—each reflecting the island’s charm. The island’s elementary and junior high schools have also reopened. Access is about 40 minutes by ferry from Takamatsu Port.
