Ikeda Zoo
Ikeda Zoo is one of the larger zoos in Okayama Prefecture, and despite its scale and many exhibits, it is a privately operated zoo—rare in Japan. Families with small children love it because popular animals like red pandas, chimpanzees, and white tigers can be seen up close, and because it’s a “just right” size that doesn’t leave you exhausted even after walking around. Another feature is that you can enter with your pet, making it easy to visit even while traveling with a pet. Beyond just viewing animals, there are also interaction opportunities and feeding experiences—definitely worth trying. The zoo also keeps some animals that are relatively rare to see in Japan, including hyenas and meerkats. While some animals have passed away in recent years due to age, it is a long-established zoo and is known for having multiple animals that are among the “oldest in Japan,” reflecting attentive care. With a mountain nearby, you can feel nature and animals together. For drivers, there is a parking lot available for 500 yen per day.
