Restaurant Toyoken
Restaurant Toyoken is a restaurant in Beppu City, Oita Prefecture, said to be the birthplace of toriten. Toriten is a dish of chicken coated in batter and fried, made by seasoning chicken with soy sauce and grated garlic, then dipping it in tempura flour and frying it. The toriten is eaten dipped in vinegar soy sauce, and at Restaurant Toyoken it is enjoyed with kabosu citrus vinegar soy sauce. The crispy toriten pairs perfectly with the refreshing, palate-tightening kabosu flavor, creating an addictive taste. It is popular among locals as well as tourists, and lines form for the toriten set meal. Toriten is a home-style dish in Oita and is not widely known across Japan, which is why Beppu is one of the best places to try it. It is one of the must-try dishes when visiting for sightseeing. Inside the restaurant, autographs from celebrities are displayed, adding to the prestige of this original toriten restaurant. Access to Restaurant Toyoken is by taking an Oita Kotsu bus from Beppu Station, getting off at “Ishigaki 8-chome,” then walking 6 minutes.
