Aoi Aso Shrine

Aoi Aso Shrine is a shrine in Hitoyoshi City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Locals often call it “Aoi-san,” so using that name in taxis can help. It’s a rare shrine with a red bridge just beyond the torii gate. Five buildings including the main hall are designated National Treasures. It is said to have been founded in 806, giving it a long history. It’s also known for its thatched-roof (kayabuki) structures, which are unusual nationwide. The sacred camphor tree is designated a Hitoyoshi City Natural Monument. The shrine actively hosts events such as the Okunchi Festival, Nagoshi Festival, and the Inari Shrine’s Hatsuumano Festival. You can feed the koi in the pond, and there’s a feed vending machine. Birds such as spot-billed ducks also visit, adding to the peaceful atmosphere. Free sightseeing guidance is available on weekends and holidays. Within the grounds are also Aoi Inari Shrine and Miyajidake Shrine—so visiting Aoi Aso Shrine effectively lets you visit three shrines at once. Access: a 5-minute walk from Hitoyoshi Station.
